How Long Until my Lucid Dreaming Supplements Work?

When you start taking a lucid dreaming supplement, the natural question is how long it should take for the herbal remedy to work.  You don;t want to keep taking something that doesn’t work right, yet you also don’t want to give up too soon.  The great thing about the supplements we cover here is that most should work right away, even if their effects will improve over time.  More specifically, here is a rundown of how long it take some of the more common lucid dreaming supplements to work:

– Calea Z should work right away, often the first time you take it.  However, Calea Z does not work every night even for those for whom it is a great choice, so don;t give up after only one or two times taking calea Z.

– Galantamine works the first time you take it, and as we’ve repeated very often here you should not take Galantamine more than once or twice a week anyway so there is no need for experimentation.  If Galantamine does not work for you after one or two times, its worth trying something else.

– Choline Citrate is the first of our lucid dreaming supplements that may have an additive effect.  You may find that this lucid dreaming herb actually works better if you take it regularly.

– Melatonin may work a little better if you take it regularly, but many doctors have become concerned about the idea of people taking melatonin over longer periods so it may be worth checking in with her or him first.

– 5-HTP is another lucid dreaming supplement known to have an additive effect over time for some people, so you may want to take this one for a few weeks before judging its effectiveness

These are just very general guidelines regarding how long to try each lucid dreaming supplement.  Of course your experience may vary.

A Powerful Combination of Lucid Dreaming Supplements

In most cases we do not recommend combining lucid dreaming supplements, at least at first.  You really need to know what actually helped you achieve lucid dreaming success, and combining things only muddies that water.  You end up having to take that same combination over and over in order to replicate that success, even though only one of them truly worked.  This can be both expensive and unnecessary, and that is why our usual advice is to only combine when you’ve taken each lucid dreaming supplement individually for a little while at least first.

However, in some cases there are exceptions to this rule, and there are a few lucid dreaming supplement combinations that are not only worth taking from the start, but also reported to only work well in these combinations.  In other words, in a few cases the lucid dreaming supplements work in tandem, and that is how they should be taken for maximum effect.  The most well-known example of this is the combination of Galantamine and Choline.  Choline is a water-soluble vitamin that is part of the B-complex vitamins. Alone some people find that Choline does very little when it comes to helping you achieve lucid dreams, but in combination with Galantamine there can be a strong effect.  Choline seems to increase the lucid dream promoting action of Galantamine.  In fact, many preparations of Galantamine include choline.

A step further, there appears to be another chemical that can be used in combination with the above two that makes this preparation an even stronger lucid dreaming supplement.  Alpha-GPC is taken by some who feel it improves memory and learning.  But in combination with Galantamine and Choline, Alpha-GPC may help you achieve lucid dreaming success.

Lucid Dreaming Supplements and a Lucid Dream Mask

It is quite easy to tell when someone is dreaming.  If you are able to see their closed eyes you will notice that their eyes actually move during dreams – thus the name REM or Rapid Eye Movement sleep.  For this reason there are technologies available that can actually signal you within the dream to notice that you are dreaming.  Basically what these lucid dreaming aids do is perceive that your eyes are in fact moving and then they flash light so that you have a signal in your dream that might help you notice you are dreaming.

While we do not advocate mixing lucid dreaming supplements, at least at first, because you really want to know which one does the trick before ingesting more chemistry than you need, you can mix various lucid dreaming aids since this is a quite harmless thing to do.  Thus if you are going to try Galantamine or Calea Z or Choline and want to give yourself an even better chance f success, try a lucid dreaming goggle or mask set as well.  All the lucid dreaming mask or goggles is doing is enhancing the techniques you are already using – e.g. instead of merely asking yourself during your waking day “am I dreaming”, you will also look to see if there is any flashing light.

All that the lucid dreaming mask or goggles is doing is enhancing your techniques, and what the lucid dreaming supplements are doing is creating physiological change that creates an excellent arena for lucid dreams.  Given that these two processes are so different, combining the two seems quite reasonable.  That said, once you start having lucid dreams you may want to cut back on the lucid dreaming supplements and perhaps only use the goggles or mask – it is a much cheaper approach and since Galantamine in particular can have negative effects it would be great not to need it.
